When looking for ways to make money online, people often default to the question, “Should I start a blog?”

Things to Think About Before Starting a Blog

Starting a blog is easy; picking the colors, the mood, and letting the thoughts of success swirl around, all easy. However, maintaining a blog is no easy task at all. There are several points to consider when taking on tasks to publish written content regularly. Two guiding points to consider are knowledge of topic and time. Having a clear understanding of how to present information on a topic is paramount. Gaining and maintaining the reader’s attention are definite points to consider. Within those lanes, consider how will you add to the body of existing knowledge.

Niching and Naming

Blog topics and titles are lead by niche though some choose to us their name as the title of the blog like I’ve done with Reginia Cordell. However, I also run a food and wellness blog titled, Sneakers and Forks, and it helps the reader to understand that blog topics will be about exercise and food. Lifestyles blogs are monetized, bloggers often find that niche blogs carry more authority thus commanding more for intellectual property.

Are days as a professional blogger long, boring, and stuck at the computer?

Yes, sometimes. Whenever I am presented with a topic that I am not extremely well versed, I spend time researching and extracting points for discussion. This process can take several hours if multiple sources are needed to compose a robust blog post. In addition to researching topics and extracting information, it is then the task of the blogger to organize the information in a way that is best suited for the targeted audience. Once those tasks are completed, social media curation begins which involves taking photos or finding royalty free images (purchases photos work as well) for the blog post itself, as well as ones for your social media accounts. Thereafter, it’s the process of editing, and then publishing.

Labor for each blog post will vary. Some blog posts will be just at 300 words while others may hover around 1500. It’s good to involved varied lengths on your blog.

Does professional blogging involve anything else other than writing all day?

Yes. There are several types of professional bloggers. Depending on your niche, you know, the type of blog that you decided to start, blogging tasks will vary. Several blog niches such a travel, restaurant review, and sports blogs require being engaged outdoors. Yes, you will be required to return to your computer to download photos, write, and edit, but a good portion of your time will be away from your computer.

There are a great number of ways to blog professionally, only you can answer the pressing question, “Should I start a blog”.
