Things to do in Zanzibar

By August 10, 2015April 20th, 2017Travel + Culture

Zanzibar is an attractive vacation destination for many residents residing on the continent, Europe, and throughout the Gulf. The ease in access and lure of pristine beaches, tropical weather, culture, and exploration of nature, wildly calls the names of many travelers. While the island of Zanzibar seems small geographically, there’s so much to see. In addition to being a divers paradise, Zanzibar holds gems for those of us who swim like rocks.

Here are my “Top Five Things to do in Zanzibar“:

1. Stonetown

Walking through the narrow streets of Stonetown is one of my top five things to do in Zanzibar. Stonetown is the center of activity with shops, a variety of people, access to beaches, nightlife, restaurants, and ports. Within this jurisdiction are the Anglican Cathedral, another top five, and access to Prison Island.

2. Spice Tour

Engaging in one of the many Spice Tours in Zanzibar is a must. It’s high on the top five things to do because of the educational and culture knowledge that it provides. Along with glimpse into the history and workings of the spice farms, tourists can walk away with loads of information and flavorful handmade spices.

3. Jozani Chwaka National Park

Jozani Chwaka National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey.

4. Prison Island

Prison Island, or Changuu Island, is a small island just north of Stonetown. It is the former quarantine holding station for those with yellow fever. It is also said to have been a slave trading station. It is now home to the endangered Aldabra Giant Tortoises.

5. Anglican Cathedral

Anglican Cathedral is a historical landmark in Zanzibar. It holds the famous slave monument as well as the original holding cells used during slave trading.

Honorable Mentions

The Rock Restaurant

The Rock Restaurant is a must see, if you have time. It’s located quite a distance from Nungwi as well as Stonetown. This unique structure is best seen during high tide so you can boat over to your culinary delights.

Nungwi Beaches

Perfect for divers, swimmers, water babies, ladies looking for “beach boys”, pristine beaches, and elegant hotels.

There are tons of other activities and seasonal events in Zanzibar. Always check with a local guide and travel advisor sites.
